WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Chairman Dan Newhouse (WA-04) released the following statement after President Biden announced he would be releasing 50 million barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve:

"The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is meant for emergencies like war and natural disasters — not for lowering gas prices to boost a politician’s poll numbers," said Chairman Newhouse. "Thanks to President Biden’s failed energy agenda, we find ourselves heading back to where we were in the 60’s and 70’s with increasing energy costs and a reliance on foreign countries to meet our energy needs. This release, which will only provide short-term relief if any at all, is a political ‘Hail Mary’ attempt to lower the skyrocketing prices that are a direct result of his misguided actions. It’s clear the United States needs oil and gas, and instead of attacking American producers, who produce the cleanest energy in the world, we should be supporting them — not our adversaries — to help meet our current and future energy needs."
