Jones Secures Dare County Public Hearing On Fed's Turtle Proposal

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) announced that it will hold a public hearing in Dare County – requested by Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) and Senators Richard Burr and Kay Hagan – regarding a proposed marine critical habitat designation for loggerhead sea turtles. The proposed rule would designate a significant area off the coast of North Carolina’s Outer Banks as critical for loggerhead turtles.

Today, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) announced that it will hold a public hearing in Dare County – requested by Congressman Walter B. If approved, the designation could impact commercial and recreational fishing, dredging activities, and offshore energy development.

NMFS has already held public hearings on the proposal in Wilmington and Morehead City.  Congressman Jones requested the additional hearing because he was concerned that the geographic distance from the first two locations prevented Dare County residents from providing their input.  The Dare County hearing will be held on Thursday, November 21, at 7:00 pm at the Board of Commissioners Meeting Room in the Dare County Administration Building.

“I am pleased to hear that Dare County residents will have the opportunity to share their thoughts on the critical habitat proposal,” said Congressman Jones.  “This proposal could negatively impact the Eastern North Carolina economy, and it is essential for those who may be affected to voice their concerns.”
