Will the President Stand Up For Jobs?

After 2,349 days, time is about to be up for President Obama’s dodge on the Keystone XL pipeline. America’s New Congress has made a unified effort to make jobs a priority for the American people, and S.1, the Keystone XL Pipeline Approval Act, is en route to the president’s desk.

After 2,349 days, time is about to be up for President Obama’s dodge on the Keystone XL pipeline. America’s New Congress has made a unified effort to make jobs a priority for the American people, and S.1, the Keystone XL Pipeline Approval Act, is en route to the president’s desk.

S.1 is the definition of a win-win. By granting immediate approval of the Keystone XL pipeline, it gives American people jobs while advancing our energy security. Energy and Commerce committee member Rep. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) recently touted the benefits of Keystone in the in Tulsa World, writing, “This project is a major part of updating our nation’s energy infrastructure. By doing so, we can maintain low and reliable energy costs—giving our economy the boost it needs. For working families, this means lower utility bills and gas prices, which puts more food on the kitchen table.”

Keystone’s rewards for jobs and consumers should make signing S.1 a no-brainer. But the president, defying common sense, has issued a veto threat that would deliver a major blow to labor unionssmall businesses, and bipartisanship. Two weeks ago, 24 governors sent a letter to the president asking him to reconsider his veto and use this opportunity to stand up for American jobs. They wrote, “The pipeline would not only constitute a boon for our economy, but also for our energy security. … With one stroke of a pen, you have the power to give thousands of Americans the shot at a good-paying job that will help them provide for their families and get ahead in a tight economy.”

Will the president choose hard hats or Hollywood? Will he listen to the experts at the State Department who have confirmed saying yes to Keystone will help support over 42,000 American jobs? It’s time to put the veto pen down and instead join Congress in putting jobs and the priorities of Americans first. It’s #TimeToBuild.
