Washington, D.C. (August 3, 2015) – Today the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized a rule regulating emissions of carbon dioxide. The rule would force the closure of coal-fired power plants across the nation and lead to an unprecedented reliance on intermittent forms of energy. Western Caucus Chairman Cynthia Lummis (WY-at large) issued the following statement in response: “With the stroke of a pen, President Obama’s EPA is launching a regulatory attack on the west and the nation that will singlehandedly lower our nation’s GDP, increase the price of each kilowatt, and make our power supply less secure,” said Lummis. “We can’t take for granted the communities and families in coal country who produce the stable electrical supply that is crucial to our way of life and our aspirations for national prosperity. But that is exactly what the EPA is doing today in rolling out a rule forcing a radical transformation of our power mix without fully accounting for its technical and economic feasibility. It’s reckless and irresponsible to move forward with this plan, which will have a barely discernible impact on global temperatures and sea levels. This plan doesn’t make our air any cleaner or our environment any safer, but it will inflict tremendous economic and human costs with the poor and middle class hit the hardest.” ### |
