Washington, D.C., Jul 17 - Congressman Doc Hastings released the following statement on the Department of Energy’s (DOE) intent to restructure the Environmental Management (EM) program:

“This plan addresses my longstanding concerns about moving EM under the NNSA where it would always come last in line behind weapons programs.

As outlined to me, the restructuring should strengthen the EM program by providing the clear and narrow focus it needs to be successful.

After a productive meeting with Secretary Moniz last week, I am encouraged by this renewed prioritization of the nuclear waste cleanup responsibilities of the federal government.

I'm hopeful that these changes can be implemented quickly along with the nomination of an Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management.”
