U.S. Congressman Paul Broun, M.D. (GA-10) released the following statement after voting today in support of H.R. 3080, the Water Resources Reform and Development Act of 2013 (WRRDA). This legislation contained important language to advance the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project as well as a number of streamlining reforms which would allow the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to support and maintain our nation’s ports and waterways while eliminating backlogs and red tape.

“This bill will help boost Georgia’s economy and create jobs by allowing the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project to finally move forward. It is vital that the Administration makes deepening the port a top priority and that we continue to work towards completion of this project,” said Rep. Broun. “At the same time, I’m pleased that this legislation leaves out any attacks by other states on Georgia’s water supply.  While we have been successful in this effort thus far, it is important that we remain vigilant as we move towards a House/Senate conference.

“Unfortunately, two amendments that I offered to address an issue close to my constituents – the ability for recreation areas located on Corps-managed lakes to remain self-reliant and ultimately open for business – were not allowed to be considered on the House floor.  I look forward to continuing to work to resolve these issues so Georgia residents may continue to enjoy the lakes as they have in the past.  In the meantime, I see WRRDA as a positive step forward for Georgia and our nation, and I was pleased to support it.”
